Bonnie Schneider
After graduating from an Bachelor of Music program (Boston University in 1963), but subsequently witnessing the liberal arts as a teacher (Brown University 1971-75) I'm an advocate for education which integrates the study of arts alongside study of different subjects. It is no surprise coming from an ethnomusicologist who has an MA in 1967, and also an Ph.D. from UCLA. The ethnomusicology program that I started at UC Berkeley (from 1975-1976) can be found in the department of music within the College of Letters and Science. I love exploring my interests in a variety of areas and seeing the big image. I really enjoy teaching, both students in the undergraduate level (majors as well as non-majors for whom I have written three texts namely Music in India: Music in India: Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically as well as Music in Japan: Experiencing music, Experimenting with Culture) as well as graduate students. Thereafter, I'll switch between academic pursuits and administrative tasks (I served as Chair of Department of Music from 1983 to 1988, Dean of undergraduate Advising in 1992-1998, and the Chair of the College of Letters and Science Deans 1994-98; Chairperson of Group of Asian Studies since 1999 and am now back as Chair of Department of Music).
